Hatha vs Ashtanga: which yoga style is right for you?

August 11, 2026 · 1 min read

If you’re new to yoga, the names can be confusing. Two of the most common styles are Hatha and Ashtanga — and they feel quite different. Here’s how to pick the right starting point.

Hatha: slow and gentle

Hatha means holding postures with awareness and breath. It’s slower, calmer, and forgiving — the easiest place to begin, and lovely for stress and flexibility.

Ashtanga: dynamic and flowing

Ashtanga follows a set, flowing sequence linked to breath. It’s more physical and builds strength and stamina — energising once you have a little foundation.

Which should you choose?

Brand new to yoga, or wanting calm? Start with Hatha. Want a workout and a challenge as you progress? Ashtanga is for you. Many people practise both.

You don’t have to decide alone

Try each and see what your body enjoys — there’s no wrong choice.

I teach both live online, beginner-friendly. See the classes or book a free trial.
