What is Ashtanga Yoga? A beginner’s guide

July 27, 2026 · 1 min read

Ashtanga looks intense from the outside — flowing, sweaty, athletic. But at its heart it’s simple: the same sequence of postures, linked to breath, practised again and again until it becomes moving meditation. Here’s a beginner’s guide.

The idea behind Ashtanga

Ashtanga follows a set sequence, so you’re never guessing what comes next. Each movement is tied to an inhale or exhale, which keeps your mind focused and your body warm.

Is it too hard for beginners?

Not if you start slow. You don’t learn the whole sequence on day one — you build it piece by piece, at your own pace. Strength, stamina and flexibility come naturally over weeks, not overnight.

What you’ll gain

Real strength you can feel, better focus, and a steady, meditative rhythm that carries into the rest of your day.
