How to actually breathe in your first yoga class
July 25, 2026 · 1 min read
Here’s a secret every yoga teacher knows: beginners hold their breath. The moment a pose gets hard, the breath disappears. Learning to keep it flowing is the real skill — the poses are almost secondary.
Start with the exhale
Most people try to breathe in deeper. Instead, focus on breathing out fully. A long, slow exhale calms the nervous system and makes the next inhale effortless.
The 4–4 rhythm
Breathe in for a count of four, out for a count of four. Match your movement to it — inhale to lengthen, exhale to fold. That’s it. That’s the whole practice.
When you lose it, come back
You will forget to breathe. Everyone does. The practice isn’t never losing the breath — it’s noticing and returning, again and again.
We spend the first three minutes of every class on nothing but breathing. Come try a beginner-friendly session.
