Yoga for stress and anxiety: how the breath calms a busy mind
August 11, 2026 · 1 min read
Stress lives in the body as much as the mind — tight shoulders, shallow breath, a racing heart. Yoga, and especially the breath, is one of the simplest ways to settle it. Here’s why it works and how to start.
Why the breath calms you
Slow, deep breathing switches on the body’s rest-and-digest system. A long exhale literally lowers your heart rate — it’s calm you can control on demand.
A 3-minute practice
Sit tall. Breathe in for four counts, out for six. Do this for three minutes and notice your shoulders drop and your mind quiet.
Move the tension out
Gentle poses — a forward fold, a soft twist, child’s pose — release where stress collects. No strength needed, just breath and softness.
The habit that helps most
A few calm minutes most days trains your nervous system to settle faster, even off the mat.
